We serve an awesome God! There are so many things to know about him. Yet, our minds will never grasp all of who he is and what he is. “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts” (Isaiah 55:8-9 ESV).
Just because we can’t grasp everything, doesn’t mean that we can’t grasp anything about God. There is good news: God wants us to know a lot about Him, so much that he has graciously revealed himself in three significant ways: One is in nature, “For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them” (Romans 1:19 ESV). Another is in Jesus. He said, “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father” (John 14:9 ESV). A third way is in the Scriptures: “For this reason I, Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus on behalf of you Gentiles—assuming that you have heard of the stewardship of God’s grace that was given to me for you, how the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I have written briefly. When you read this, you can perceive my insight into the mystery of Christ” (Ephesians 3:1-4 ESV).
One of the wonderful things about our God is that he does not change. Malachi tells us, “For I the LORD do not change” (Malachi 3:6 ESV). Moses said, “From everlasting to everlasting you are God” (Psalm 90:2 ESV). God declares concerning himself, “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty” (Revelation 1:8 ESV).
There is much to know about God. He has made himself known through nature, Jesus and the Scriptures. He doesn’t change, so we can rest assured that he is what he has revealed himself to be.
In the following articles, I will share some thoughts about who God is, what we know about him and what he expects of us. Let’s begin with a study of his names.
