Falling in Love with the Bible

Falling in Love with the Bible

We spend time with the ones we love.  We are always looking for opportunities to get together with them.  It doesn’t matter if it’s a quiet visit, a meal, a quick phone call or text, we cherish the time.  Whichever happens, it’s our way of saying to that person, “I love you.”  When it comes to the Bible, we need to share that same level of love.  Actually, the Bible encourages this also.  Consider these passages:

  • 1 Peter 2:2 (KJV) “As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby.”
  • Colossians 3:16 (NKJV) “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly.”
  • 2 Peter 3:18 (CSB) “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”

Psalm 119 is sometimes referred to as a love letter to God concerning his word.  In it, the writer continually expresses his love for God and his word:

  • Psalm 119:33-37 (ESV) “Teach me, O LORD, the way of your statutes; and I will keep it to the end.  Give me understanding, that I may keep your law and observe it with my whole heart.  Lead me in the path of your commandments, for I delight in it.  Incline my heart to your testimonies, and not to selfish gain!  Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things; and give me life in your ways.”
  • Psalm 119:103 (NASB) “How sweet are Your words to my taste!  Yes, sweeter than honey in my mouth!”
  • Psalm 119:159-160 (ESV) “Consider how I love your precepts!  Give me life according to your steadfast love.  The sum of your word is truth, and every one of your righteous rules endures forever.”

You learn to love God’s word, by spending time with it.  Read it over and over again. This approach is simple, but it will change your life. It’s amazing how that the more time you spend with The Book, the more you will want to.  There’s no better time than today to start studying the Bible for yourself.  You will fall in love with it, I promise.

Things to Consider

  • Talk about how you might treat the Bible if you treated it as you do someone who you love.
  • Did you know you could read through the New Testament twice each year by reading two chapters per day?
