Romans 2 Study Sheet

1. One can nearly see the heads of the Jews shaking approvingly as Paul condemns the actions of the idol worshiping pagan world in chapter one. However, in chapter two, when he turns to the Jews, he says that they have “_______ _______________” because they who are condemning the pagans are practicing “_______ ____________ _____________ ___________________” (2:1).

2. The guilt of the Jews stems from the fact that, while they condemned the pagan lifestyle, the Jews were guilty of doing the same thing (2:3). God had shown kindness, forbearance and patience toward them to lead them to ________________ (2:4). However, their impenitent attitude was having the effect of “_____________ ________ ________________” (2:5) when God’s judgment takes place.

3. In 2:6, it is stated that God “will render to each one according to his ___________.” To one group he will give __________________ _________ (2:7). To the other there will be ____________ and ____________ (2:8). In all this “God shows no __________________” (2:11). Describe the difference in what the two groups seek:

a. Eternal life group:

b. Wrath and fury group:

4. When it comes to God’s judgment and the Law, it is not the “_____________” who are righteous but the “_____________” (2:13). In other words, God will be looking at the hearts of men when He judges the world (2:15-16). Paul’s gospel included teaching about the judgment. What do the following scriptures by the apostle Paul contribute to our understanding of the judgment?

a. Acts 17:30-31:

b. I Corinthians 15:35-38; 42-44; 50:

c. II Thessalonians 1:6-10:

d. Philippians 2:9-13:

5. In 2:17ff. Paul points out that the problem for the Jews was that they were relying on their relationship with the law (of Moses) and to a checklist to save them. The law could show their status before God (2:23). The effect of this behavior was that God was “_____________ among the Gentiles” (2:24). Keeping the checklist had its advantage but only if they obeyed the law (2:25). However, it took a change of heart to be right with God (2:28-29). This is also an Old Testament concept: Deuteronomy 10:16; 30:6 and Jeremiah 4:4.
