Many who talk about tithing really want to talk mostly about how much you are giving to their church. God wants to talk about what you are doing with everything you have. GOD DOESN’T WANT 10% OF ANYTHING. HE WANTS 100% OF EVERYTHING!
A final concept that is important to consider regarding money is found in the words of Jesus. I believe it provides guidance not only in giving but in all parts of our lives. Jesus said, “One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much.” (Luke 16:10 ESV. See also verses 11-12). Did you catch what Jesus was saying? Honesty and faithfulness is not about amount but about the heart! The amount you have may not be large but if he can’t trust how you handle that, how can he trust you with more? Giving is a test of your commitment to God. The line in the sand for Jesus, with money or any other part of your life, is are you being honest with God that you are putting him first in everything you do? If not, the results may not be something you will like.
I have no doubt that Ananias and Sapphira gave well over 10% of the sale price of their property to the church, but it wasn’t accepted. The problem had nothing to do with the amount of the gift or the percentage of the sale but everything to do with lying (See Acts 6:1-11). So, give what you determine by your own free will, not just when the collection plate is being passed at church next Sunday but as you have opportunity and, above all, don’t lie to God. Giving is between God and you. I hope you pass the test “with flying colors.”
