Romans 1 Study Sheet

  1. In Romans 1:1, Paul uses three terms to describe himself to the Romans.  His claims are that he is (a) “a _______________ of Christ Jesus,” (b) “_____________ to be an apostle” and (c) “ _________  _____________ for the gospel of God.”  The reason for this was that he had “received grace and apostleship to bring about the _____________ of _____________” (Romans 1:5).  In the midst of this introduction, Paul makes a profound statement about Jesus.  According to the flesh, Jesus was the son of David (Romans 1:3).  However, he was shown to be much more than that; he was shown to be the “Son of God” with power over death by his resurrection (Romans 1:4).  This resurrection is credited to “the Spirit of ________________” (Romans 1:5 i.e. The Holy Spirit).
  2. Read Romans 1:8-15.  Even though Paul had never been to Rome, they were a part of his life.  How?  (1) _________________________ (2) ________________________ He wanted to come to Rome so that they and he could be ______________________  ______________________ (Romans 1:12) and that he could “___________________  ____________  _______________” among them (Romans 1:13).  Paul felt an obligation so that he was “eager to _______________ the ____________________” to them (Romans 1:15).  What is the message for us in this passage?
  3. According to Romans 1:1 this is the “gospel of _________” and Romans 1:9 it is “gospel of ________ ___________.” The theme of the book is found in Romans 1:16-17.  Paul lists three characteristics of the gospel.  What are they?

  1. Even though there are unrighteous persons who suppress the truth, man is “without excuse” because there are some things about God that are plain.  The creation itself teaches us lessons about His invisible attributes, that is His _______________  _______________ and ____________ _______________ (Romans 1:20).
  2. List the results of failing to acknowledge God from the creation (see Romans 1:18-23):

  1. When people fail to acknowledge God, the reaction of God is consistent and may be summarized in the four words, “_________  _________  __________  _________”  (Romans 1:24,26 and 28).  This, along with the serious declaration in Romans 1: 18 that “the _____________ of God is revealed” against the ones who are ungodly and unrighteous should serve as a sober warning.  The reason that “God gave them up” and that “The wrath of God is revealed” against them is that they stand guilty before God.  This is not just a “feeling of guilt” as one might hear discussed when a psychologist is talking with a client, but an actual moral guilt because these people had broken God’s teachings.  These people are guilty of actual __________ (Romans 3:23).  The effect of sin is a separation from ____________ (Isaiah 59:1-2), which leads to spiritual _____________ (Romans 6:23).
  2. When God gave them up, the degradation of those who did not choose to acknowledge God follows a pattern that begins with (1) dishonor of themselves (Romans 1:24) and moves on to (2) dishonor of others (Romans 1:26-27), finally ending up (3) doing just about everything that should not be done (Romans 1:28-31).  The resultant attitude is a (1) total hardness toward God, (2) acceptance of this as an appropriate lifestyle for themselves and (3) giving of _________________ to others who live this way (Romans 1:32).  How does this apply to our life today?
